Uptown Mint Museum

One of the most extensive fine art museums in the Southeast, this long-standing Charlotte institution is a mainstay of the Uptown arts neighborhood. The Uptown site boasts a contemporary, architecturally striking 145,000-square-foot facility that holds an extensive collection of American and foreign art, as well as crafts and design. The extensive permanent collection of the Mint includes both modern and contemporary artwork and antique objects from the New World. Even more diversity is added by special touring and rotating displays. For a list of the current exhibitions, check ahead. The price of the ticket includes admission to the Mint Museum Randolph, located on the second museum site (the original museum area), if time permits.

Science at Discovery Place

Discovery Place Science, an Uptown attraction, offers interactive displays, an IMAX Dome Theater, and a three-story rain forest with real creatures. It is regarded as one of the best interactive science museums in the nation. Although families and children frequent the museum, it also hosts an adult-only session called “Science on the Rocks” every third Friday of the month. To view the most recent special exhibitions and programs, check the online calendar before you visit. If you have more time, you may buy a combo ticket that allows you to visit Discovery Place Nature, which is the other museum of Discovery Place, which is situated in the lovely Freedom Park.

Bechtler Modern Art Museum

Swiss architect Mario Botta created Charlotte’s leading contemporary art museum, the Bechtler, which is a must-see for both its distinctive and gorgeous architecture and the art housed within.

There are more than 1,400 pieces by renowned 20th-century modern artists including Picasso, Miro, Degas, Klee, Giacometti, and Warhol, based on the Bechtler family’s private collection. Explore sculptures, paintings, sketches, and other installations that were seldom seen by the public until the museum opened in 2010 as you stroll around the stunning four-story building with its large glass atrium and outdoor terrace. Special touring exhibitions and activities, like “Jazz at the Bechtler,” are often hosted by the museum.

The New South’s Levine Museum

The remarkable changes that Charlotte and the Carolina Piedmont have seen since the American Civil War are the main topic of this one-of-a-kind history museum. Multimedia and artifact-rich exhibits chart the history of the area from the post-Reconstruction era to the present. Don’t miss their renowned and award-winning exhibit, “Cotton Fields to Skyscrapers,” which delves into the social history of the Piedmont’s economic transition from a rural, agricultural civilization to a prominent hub for business and industry. A tenant farmer’s house, cotton mill equipment, and a lunch table where local Civil Rights sit-in activists tell their tales are all brought to life in this exhibit. The purpose of changing temporary exhibitions is to stimulate community discussion about current concerns facing the region.

Carowinds

Situated at the border between North and South Carolina, Carowinds has been the area’s top amusement park for over half a century. Enthusiasts like the park’s fourteen top-notch roller coasters, which include Fury 325, the tallest and fastest giga coaster in the world, and Copperhead Strike, the first double-launch coaster in the Carolinas. Camp Snoopy is a 12-acre children’s section with attractions that are suitable for the whole family and interactive play areas for the little ones. The park’s all-inclusive water park, Carolina Harbor, is a great place to remain cool throughout the summer. Seasonal events, concerts, and live entertainment are also available all year round. To view the events, check the online calendar before you go.
